Skiing in Switzerland
One of the main reasons for holidaying in Switzerland is undoubtedly the fantastic skiing on offer. It’s actually impossible to avoid, it’s a cultural phenomenon, and an infectious one at that. The Swiss all learn to ski before they can walk and the word ’beginner’ attached to anyone over the age of seven automatically signifies foreigner.
Let’s not forget, though, that skiing isn’t a past-time which comes cheap. There are the clothes to start with - if you don’t have your own and you can’t borrow from a friend, renting an entire outfit is a rather harsh on anyone’s budget, to the extent to which it’s probably just worth buying some second hand gear if you’re planning more than three or four trips. Then there are the skis, boots and poles, which are usually reasonable value to hire, but are still a major factor in the overall cost. Travel insurance rockets mile high as soon as you even whisper the word snow and assuming you don't own your own chalet then accommodation is going to be necessary in one form or another.
The location on everyone’s lips come November is usually Verbier; a destination popular with natives and holiday makers alike. To hire a chalet in Verbier while the snow is still in good condition will be your biggest expense. Alternative accommodation is available in the form of cheap hotels or youth hostels, which tend to be favoured by the younger student population who tend to rough it and make the best of things.
If you are thinking about going on a ski holiday then take a look at Alpine Elements, who offer ski breaks from a few days up to several weeks.
You could also check out cheapflights.com for discount flights to a variety of ski destinations in France, Spain and Italy to name but a few.
