Ski holidays: Think Outside the Box!
When planning a ski holiday your most popular thoughts for a destination are likely to be France, Italy, Switzerland and Austria. However, you should also consider the alternatives of Spain, Slovakia, Bulgaria and Poland, all of which offer great skiing at competitive rates and a different experience to that of your normal ski trip.
Though a less popular winter destination than France or Italy, Poland gives you skiing opportunities that are not just as good as the more popular destinations, but much better value. In Zakopane, for example, you can find a wide range of slopes and accommodation at prices so disproportionately low to the standard of attractions provided that you’ll think there’s a catch! The Polish mountains offer great scenery whether you’re skiing the slopes or relaxing in a bar and the snowfall is as good as anywhere.
The heart of the Polish Mountains lies at the foot of the Tatra Mountains, which make up the highest part of the Carpathian mountain range. These mountains split Poland from Slovakia, the highest being Rysy at a lofty 2,499 metres. The most popular skiing destination in Poland is Zakopane, which is also known as the Gate to the Polish Tatras, and locally as the Winter Capital of Poland. In close proximity to Zakopane is Kasprowy Wierch, Kocio Goryczkowy and Gubawka, all of which have slopes ideal for whatever level of skier you are.
The city itself is a mix of Polish tradition and western modernism, which is fantastic for those who like a little more to their holiday than just the snow. The city’s character is kept alive through the many bars and restaurants, these again offering unimaginably low prices, for example it wouldn’t be unusual to have a full meal for around £5-£10 with drinks, and that’s the expensive end.
The more popular resorts will always draw visitors each year, but Poland’s mountains, and in particular Zakopane, give a wholly different experience. For those on a budget, or just those with an eye for a bargain, Poland is undoubtedly a great ski destination for fun, value and hospitality.
