France's Skiing
Due to the diversity of resorts and slopes in the Alps, France really does offer some of the best skiing opportunities in the world.
From the well known and more popular resorts of Val D'Isere and Tignes, both in the Espace-Killy region, to the lesser known and calmer destinations such as La Rosiere, there is something for everyone.
Val Thorens is well known because of its altitude, the highest in Europe. This has both advantages and drawbacks. On the plus side its altitude of 2300 metres above sea-level means it's high above the tree line and therefore has wider, and safer, runs. The downside of being so high up is that on windy days the skiing can be exhausting as you battle against the elements to stay on course and often the wind can present dangers. You can always take a ski lift over to the three valleys area lower down the mountain if the wind presents itself, depending on your skiing ability.
Val D'Isere and Tignes are the two best known ski resorts in France, and for good reason. Both are situated in the Espace-Killy region and are on par for quality. They both offer excellent quality slopes and Apres-Ski opportunities in abundance. From casual bars where you can relax outside basking in the alpine sunshine to modern restaurants serving fine noveau cuisine to reward you after a day on the snow, there's always somewhere good to go. Tignes is the smaller of the two but Val D'Isere, unlike most ski resorts, has never forgotten about its origin and history and you can see examples of this around the town.
Meribel, situated in the Meribel valley, sits at the entrance to the Three-Valleys area which boasts over 600km of ski runs in the world's largest interlinked ski area with lifts to all the resorts both accessible and quick. The slopes around Meribel are good for beginners to intermediate skiers, with the advanced ones able to take a lift to any of the three Valleys, making Meribel a great place to stay for a group with mixed abilities or for those who wish to stay a little away from the hustle and bustle of the main ski runs.
Wherever you go in the French Alps there are resorts with runs for people of all ages and abilities as well as entertainment to wind down after a hard day's skiing. Booking is normally easy and with sites like Alpine Elements offering ski deals to suit all levels it’s time to grab your passport and goggles and hit those Alps!
