Val Thorens.  Highest Point. 3300
                  Lowest          1400
Resort Altitude: 2300m

Val Thorens centre is approx. I hour from Meribel. The trip is not recommended for beginners.

You have a choice of two routes. Ski to Les Menuires, Reberty and catch the Les Bruyeres bubble up to the entry point for VT. This is an easy route if you catch the Tougnete bubble to the top, then take the long easy path on your left (Gros Tougne) literally all the way to Les Menuires.
The other route and most popular is to head for Mottaret-Plattieres Bubble (2nd or 3rd Station) -Cote Brune Chair. (Very cold in January)

Once there you are in the highest resort station in France. It's Custom built in a giant snow bowl and the skiing is absolutely superb. It can be freezing over here at anytime in the season so go prepared. It can also be a fabulous suntrap, so take high-level sun cream and good quality sunglasses.

Most visitors head straight for the Cime de Caron (3200m). It really does have a spectacular view of the whole French/Italian Alps and is well worth the trip.

Be prepared for long queues at the cable car but with a carrying capacity of over 150 persons every ten minutes it is not quite as bad as it first appears. Try to avoid Fridays when All the world and his uncle seem to arrive at the same time.

There is also a fourth Valley now, La Maurienne. This was a favourite off piste jaunt but is now well pisted and has had extra lifts installed.

In fact there is so much good skiing over here you should Visit more than once.

These are a few reds that should not be missed. "Col" over by Pte De Thorens (3266m). Mauriennaise in the 4th Valley. Col De L'audzin from the top of Cime De Caron. Take a guide for some of the best off piste in Europe.

As usual we have found great places for lunch.

La Chaumiere:

A superb, little restaurant to the right of the enormous Galoubet sun terrace in the centre by the tourist office. We like La Chaumiere because it's small, friendly, the food is great and it's not expensive. Plat du jour €11.50. Mention Meribel Unplugged and you will receive a free aperitif from Maria the lady owner.

Bar Marine:

We had the most superb Coq u Vin there last season. €15. Takes Cascades chair then pop off to the right. It is on the Dalles piste just below the chair. Fabulous sun terrace or very rustic interior. Plus a much cheaper self-service section below.

The route back from VT can be extremely tiring. There is a brand new Funitel lift now out of VT to the Meribel Valley, so no more freezing to death on the two chairs. At the top take the red Lac de la Chambre down to the base of Mont Vallon.

If you do feel a bit knackered take the easy route. Boulevard Cumin from VT down to Les Menuires. At the end of Cumin take Doron Chair then Combes chair. Take the 2 blues down to Choumes draglift. After that the easy Pelozet blue to St Martin 2 chairlift, and up to Tougnete.

Whilst on the Boulevard Cumin, just below Reberty you will come across Les Sonnailles. This is a super little restaurant with Plat du Jour at €10.If your timing is right it is another great choice for lunch, with a wonderful sun terrace.
