St Martin De Belleville. 1400m
This ski area is small but consists of relaxing runs in beautiful scenery and is a wonderful venue for a village lunch. If staying in St Martin the ski pass also includes Les Menuires. Enter the valley from either the top of Tougnete, or jump on the Roc de Fer chairlift then the Olympic chair. This takes you to the top of the ladies 1992 Olympic downhill run. It's very quiet up on this sector. There is an excellent off piste run down to St Martin but as always take a guide. If you take the wrong route there are several dangerous cliffs you might happen across.

From Tougnete you have several choices but all the runs are fairly easy. The best skiing is on the upper part so take St martin 2 back up to the top a few times.

Pramint and Jerusalem are the two comfortable red runs so try to do both.

When you finally decide to go all the way down try to time it for lunch. Biolley is the blue run down. Very relaxing with wonderful views. At one point on the pathway you will see a village far down to your left. This is not St Martin; it is St Marcel the next village along. Eventually you come to small tunnel. Immediately after the tunnel turn right and there you will see the beautiful old 14th village with the church in the old square. There is no better place than this to stop for lunch.

We have found 3 super restaurants here, each one different in style.

Brewski's

This one is very popular with the Brits and serves typical pub style food, with Burgers, Pies etc. It is halfway down the piste on your left side. You walk through the Hotel and at the far end is a very quaint little courtyard where meals are served on the sun terrace. This pub/restaurant is operated by English owners and service is very friendly.

La Montagnard:

On the right of the piste set among a row of old buildings is "La Montagnard". The food here is fabulous with a plat du jour at €12. The restaurant is a converted 200-year-old barn and has no sun terrace. With only 40 covers so you must reserve. Very special this one.

La Voute:

An old favourite of ours this one is situated right opposite the church. It has the best ever Duck's leg Confit with sautéed potatoes spiced with Garlic. (€14.80) If you eat outside check out the position of the sun. It disappears behind the church steeple and can suddenly get very cold. Usually the near or far end of the terrace is the best place for a sunny table. If eating inside reserve a table in the chalet at the rear.

The return route is straightforward and takes about 30 minutes to Tougnete. Allow extra time for possible long queues at St Martin 2. Be warned: A taxi home from here is about £60-£70 and you would not be the first to be stranded here. In 1992 even two experienced ESF instructors and their classes were caught out after a long lunch and had to get transport back to Meribel.

So be warned. St Martin is a very sociable little village.
